How to Clean Jewelry at Home: 5 Easy DIY Methods
Share
Even the most beautiful jewelry can lose its sparkle with regular wear. Oils from your skin, product residue, and everyday dust can dull the shine of your favourite pieces. The good news? You don't need to visit a jeweller every time — here are 5 easy DIY methods to clean your jewelry at home.
1. Warm Water and Mild Soap
This is the gentlest and safest cleaning method for most types of jewelry. Mix a few drops of mild dish soap in a bowl of warm (not hot) water. Submerge your jewelry and let it soak for 10–15 minutes. Use a soft toothbrush to gently scrub any hard-to-reach areas. Rinse thoroughly under clean water and pat dry with a soft cloth. Best for: gold-plated, stainless steel, and gemstone jewelry.
2. Baking Soda Paste
Mix baking soda with a small amount of water to create a paste. Apply it to your jewelry with a soft cloth and gently rub in circular motions. Rinse and dry thoroughly. This method is excellent for removing tarnish from silver pieces. Avoid on: pearls and soft stones like opal or turquoise.
3. Toothpaste for Shine
A small amount of white, non-gel toothpaste on a soft toothbrush can bring real sparkle back to metal jewelry. Gently brush the surface, rinse, and buff dry. Toothpaste is mildly abrasive, so use this sparingly. Best for: plain metal pieces without stones.
4. Vinegar Soak for Silver
White vinegar is a natural cleaner that works wonderfully on silver jewelry. Soak silver pieces in a small bowl of white vinegar for 2–3 hours, then rub with a soft cloth and rinse well. The acetic acid removes tarnish effectively. Not for: pearls, porous stones, or gold-plated pieces.
5. Club Soda Refresh
Club soda's gentle carbonation is surprisingly effective at loosening dirt from jewelry. Submerge your piece in a glass of club soda for a few minutes, gently brush with a soft cloth, rinse, and dry. This is a particularly safe method for diamonds and hard gemstones.
